GEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
Black tourmaline, also known as schorl, is the most common variety of the tourmaline family. She is instantly recognised by her deep, opaque black colour and distinctive striations running along her elongated, prismatic crystals. Composed of complex borosilicate with traces of iron, her richness in iron gives her the dense black hue. With a hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, she is durable and often found in association with quartz and mica. Significant deposits of black tourmaline are found in Brazil, Africa, Pakistan, and the United States, and she has long been treasured for both her striking appearance and protective qualities.
