Carnelian is a vibrant orange to red variety of chalcedony, a form of quartz that belongs to the trigonal crystal system. With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale she is both durable and beautiful. Her colour comes from iron oxide and can range from soft sunset hues to deep, fiery tones. Found in Brazil, India, Russia, Madagascar and South Africa among other locations, she has been treasured since ancient times. The Egyptians regarded her as a stone of vitality and protection, often used in jewellery and amulets. When held to the light, she sometimes reveals subtle stripes or a gentle translucence that adds to her warmth and depth.
