Optical Calcite, also known as Iceland Spar, is a clear and striking form of Calcite. She belongs to the hexagonal crystal system and is composed of calcium carbonate. With a modest hardness of 3 on the Mohs scale, she is relatively soft compared with many other minerals. Found in countries such as the USA, UK, Belgium, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Peru, Iceland, Romania and Brazil, she is known for her remarkable ability to split light into two rays, creating a doubled image when viewed through her. This natural gift makes her both fascinating to collectors and important in scientific history, as she was once used in optical instruments.
