She is a magnesium iron silicate, and her fresh, grassy colour comes from traces of iron in her structure. With a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, she is bright and durable, often forming in volcanic rocks and sometimes found in meteorites. She is sourced from regions such as Egypt, Pakistan, Brazil, the USA, and the Canary Islands. In ancient times she was known as “the gem of the sun” and was treasured for her luminous green glow, said to ward off evil spirits. Her formation deep within the Earth’s mantle and emergence through volcanic activity symbolise renewal and the transformation of inner fire into radiant light.
